Part of a collaborative research project on cancer inequities with marginalized communities. The film critically reflects on documentary practice in Latin America and documents the empowerment of local health initiatives.
The film as well as the artwork by Nico Rodriguez was part of a transformative scientific project in collaboration with social workers and representatives of the local community at the CAAC social center. Empowering and self organization of marginalized communities was the the focus. The role of social research and the colonial root sof documentary practice (in particular in Latin Americal) was critically reflected throughout the process and part of the following scientific publication. The filmmaker refers to the Tercer Cine movement (in particular positions by Luis Ospina y Mayolo), raise the question of shared authorship and audiovisual sovereignty (Pablo Mora Claderón). The proyect on the ground lives on, nurses, social worker and most of all the community are transforming health prevention practices. Today, the CAAC project center is run independently by local people who have been trained as prevention workers.
